Budyonnovsk is located in the Stavropol Territory on the Kuma river. It is named after Semyon Budyonny, an officer in the First World War and Civil Wars, three times Hero of the Soviet Union, who was awarded the Cross of St. George (Full Cavalier), and was a commander in World War II. People have settled on the site of modern-day Budennovsk since time immemorial, and the ethnic composition and the nationality of the city has changed throughout different epochs. The earliest traces found belong to the Maikop archaeological culture, dating back to the 2nd millennium BCE.
