The geographical and historical position of Kingisepsky district is unique: it has the sea border with Finland and land border with Estonia. Kingisepp was founded in 1384 as a fortress, Yam. From 1703 to 1922 the city was called Yamburg, then was renamed in honor of the Estonian revolutionary Victor Kingisepp. According to the plan of the 1780s, the city had a regular layout. One octagonal trading square (its design is attributed to the Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi) survived the building of the shopping arcade, built in 1835.
